All 58,000+ entries of the Mahan Kosh as a native dictionary. On Mac, select any Gurmukhi word in Pages, Word, or Safari, right-click, and choose Look Up to see the entry in place. On Windows, the free GoldenDict app gives a popup lookup from any program. Works fully offline.

Install on Mac

  1. Unzip the download.
  2. In Finder press Cmd-Shift-G and go to ~/Library/Dictionaries (create the folder if it does not exist), then copy “Mahan Kosh.dictionary” into it.
  3. Open the Dictionary app, choose Dictionary > Settings, and tick ਮਹਾਨ ਕੋਸ਼.
  4. In any app, select a Gurmukhi word, right-click, and choose Look Up (or tap the trackpad with three fingers).

Install on Windows

  1. Install the free GoldenDict app (goldendict.org).
  2. Unzip the download and copy the “mahankosh-stardict” folder somewhere permanent, for example Documents\Dictionaries.
  3. In GoldenDict choose Edit > Dictionaries > Files > Add, pick that folder, then Rescan.
  4. Select a Gurmukhi word in any app and press the popup hotkey (default Ctrl+C+C) to see the entry.

Type Gurbani in Unicode, in Word, Pages, or anywhere

The phonetic Gurmukhi Unicode keyboard: k types ਕ, g types ਗ, and vowels compose naturally (a+u makes ਉ, A+w makes ਆ, e+i makes ਇ, and 1 a o makes ੴ). It also carries the Gurbani Tutor special keys on Option (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt (Windows): the nasal-first lag pairs ਂੀ and ੰੀ on n and m, the sirlekh ank subscripts ₁ ₂ ₃ ₄ ₅ ₆ ₈ on the digits, and one-punch adha (paer) letters ੍ਵ ੍ਟ ੍ਤ ੍ਚ ੍ਯ ੍ਠ ੍ਨ on each letter's own key (paer ਰ and ਹ are on Shift+r and Shift+h, and the halant on Shift+comma composes any other adha letter). A full key chart is included in the download.

Install on Mac

  1. Unzip the download.
  2. In Finder press Cmd-Shift-G and go to ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts (create the folder if it does not exist), then copy “gurmukhi-phonetic-gt.bundle” into it.
  3. Log out and log back in.
  4. System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Input Sources > Edit > “+”, find “Gurmukhi - Phonetic GT” under Punjabi (or Others), and add it.
  5. Switch keyboards from the input menu in the menu bar (or Ctrl-Space).

Install on Windows

  1. Install AutoHotkey v2 (free) from autohotkey.com.
  2. Unzip the download and double-click GurmukhiPhonetic.ahk. A green H appears in the system tray and you can type Gurmukhi in every app.
  3. Press Ctrl+Alt+G any time to switch between Gurmukhi and English typing.
  4. To start it with Windows, press Win+R, type shell:startup, press Enter, and copy the script into that folder.
