“Listen to the amazing and great Katha of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. Listen to how he tested the Sikhs and how Guru Angad Dev ji was known to be the wisest. One day, the three of us went to Guru ji. Guru ji went into the Ravi to bathe. One, Sri Guru Angad Dev ji; second, Bhai Bagheerath ji and the third was myself; we were with Guru ji. It was cold and it began to hail. Bhai Bagheerath ji and I returned home to warm ourselves with fire. Sri Guru Angad Dev ji remained. He fainted from the cold. He lost awareness of his body. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji sensed this and came out of the river. He knew the state of Guru Angad Dev ji. That was one test. Guru ji also took on a form which was scary. The Sikhs ran away from him. The Shabad “Ek Suaan Doe Suaani Naal,” was uttered at that time. He wore old clothes and tied a bed rope to his head. He spilled Lassi on top of himself. Many insects surrounded him for that reason. He took a thick rope and tied it around his waist. He held a crocked stick. He tied an unsheathed knife to his waist. He wore a Mala of bones like the Rudras Mala of skulls. Guru ji took many dogs with him to hunt. It was like the scary form of Shiv. The Guru Master made this form and many people saw this. They got scared and said: “what did he do?” They became doubtful. Other than Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, everyone was in doubt. He stayed with Guru ji and didn’t leave. He showed another thing: “eat a dead body,” he commanded us. This Katha, I tell you as it happened. I will tell you this amazing Katha. Taking many Sikhs along with him, the Guru Master took them all close to the river. After some distance, Guru ji showed a lot of Paisas to the Sikhs, scattered upon the floor. He said: “take as much Paisas as you wish and leave.” Many got doubtful. Many took the money and went to their homes. They took a lot of money. Some still stayed. They walked a little further and Guru ji showed them a lot of Rajitpuns. There were piles upon piles. He commanded: “take as much as you need.” Many gathered the Rajitpuns and went home. The ones who loved Guru ji, did not take the Rajitpuns. They stayed with Guru ji. After walking some more, there were piles of Dinars, which were gold coins. Guru ji said: “take as much as you wish. I have done this for you.” Many people took the golden coins. They had greed in their hearts. Some, who had a lot of love for Guru Sahib, remained. Myself, Bhai Sadharan ji, Bhai Bagheerath ji and Sri Guru Angad Dev ji remained with Guru ji. We didn’t care for wealth. After walking further, we saw some ground. There was firewood gathered there and a platform with a dead body on it. Guru ji stood by the dead body and said: “the ones who wanted money have left, taking the money. You are the ones with deep love towards me. You came with me to here. I want you all to eat this dead body.” We were shocked seeing the dead body in the middle of the jungle. We folded our hands and said: “a human does not eat a dead human. This is scary. We can’t do this.” Guru ji took his stick and swung it at us. He said: “then eat this!” The three of us ran and hid behind trees. Guru Angad Dev ji did not run away. Guru Nanak Dev ji spoke to Guru Angad Dev ji in a very harsh way: “why are you here? Go away, quickly! Otherwise eat this dead body!” Guru Angad Dev ji obeyed and removed the cloth from the dead body. When he lifted the cloth, there was only Tihaaval (Karah Prashaad) there. It was amazing! The whole drama was gone. Guru ji hugged Sri Guru Angad Dev ji and made him the same light as him. He installed the light of the Gurta inside of Guru Angad Dev ji. He gave him the Gurta of the whole universe. He set his own light inside of Guru Angad Dev ji. There were many other Prasangs as how Guru Angad Dev ji was tested. I haven’t said them all. There were too many. Guru ji gave him the Gurta Ghaddi and said: “don’t stay here. Go to Khadoor and make your home there. Where your relatives are, call them to yourself and live there together. Live there in joy.” Guru Angad Dev ji obeyed the command but he didn’t want to separate from Guru Nanak Dev ji. The love in his heart was deep. Helpless, he had no choice. He bowed to Guru Nanak Dev ji’s feet and left with a great pain in his heart. Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “my Singhasan is at Mata Bhirai’s (Guru Angad Dev ji’s paternal aunt) home. Go and sit on the throne there. Be the Guru.” Hearing the Prabhoo, Guru Angad Dev ji set off. His heart was full of the wealth of Premi Bhagti. He had the great and unending wealth of the Sat Nam. The more he spent this, the more it grew.

Guru Angad Dev ji came to his village and met Mata Bhirai ji. She met Guru Angad Dev ji with love and respect. She sat him on a nice seat. Mata Bhirai ji did not see a difference between Guru Nanak Dev ji and Guru Angad Dev ji, even though Guru Angad Dev ji was her nephew. Mata Khivi ji (Guru Angad Dev ji’s wife) was called there. She served her husband there. She followed the Patibrat Dharam with determination. She was wise with cooking and wearing clothes. She served her husband with selflessness. She folded her hands and obeyed his commands. She did Seva with a deep love. She made food everyday. She only did his Darshan after receiving permission. She saw her husband as the Parmeshwar and meditated upon his form.

When separating from Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, Guru ji said: “don’t come back here. Go right away. Go and live in Khadoor. I will come to you there. Live in Khadoor. I will come there. I will meet you when your heart wishes it.” After a few days, both sides wished to meet each other. They became impatient because of the separation. Guru Nanak Dev ji wished to meet Guru Angad Dev ji and so he came to Khadoor. Sri Guru Angad Dev ji sensed Guru Nanak Dev ji’s arrival. He came forward to meet him. Seeing the Guru as the sun, Guru Angad Dev ji made his eyes into the lotus. His mind became the bee for the lotus feet of the Guru. Guru Nanak Dev ji hugged him. Guru Angad Dev ji took Guru Nanak Dev ji to a place outside of the village. (This was near Gurduara Tapyana Sahib) Mata Khivi ji heard of Guru Nanak Dev ji’s arrival and came to bow to his feet. Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “Purkha, you are great! You have me under your control by impressing me. There is nobody else like you in this world. There is no one more beloved to me than you.” He spoke courage and gave hope to Guru Angad Dev ji. His heart became cool and serene. He was in bliss as words of calmness were spoken. Guru Nanak Dev ji was about to go back to Kartarpur. Guru Angad Dev ji stood in front with his hands folded. They were two bodies but one Jot. There was a lot of bliss. Sri Guru Angad Dev ji said: “oh master, listen, keep me with you. I wish to go with you. I can’t tolerate your separation. I will live in joy in your presence.” Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “you live in my mind. There is no difference between the two of us. I will go back to Kartarpur. Stay here in joy.” After saying this, Baba ji went back. Sri Guru Angad Dev ji sat down in the same place. Guru Angad Dev ji was determined and stayed sitting in the same place for many days, obeying the Guru’s command. He sat there with closed eyed. He had no awareness of his body. Grass grew all around him. Guru ji was hidden among the tall grass. The people of the village saw him sitting. People said: “he gave the command and he himself obeyed the command. His ways cannot be known.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the Omniscient One, sensed what was happening: “he is sitting in the same place in a Samadhi. He is doing a great Tapp and taking on pain.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji came back and woke up Guru Angad Dev ji by grabbing his arm. When Guru Angad Dev ji saw Guru Nanak Dev ji, he bowed to him. Guru Nanak Dev ji called for new clothes and had him wear the beautiful new clothes. He took him into the village. Where Sri Guru Angad Dev ji did the Tapp, the place is known as Tapyana Sahib.

Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “why did you do this Tapp? I just casually told you to sit there. You sat there for many days and tolerated hunger and thirst. Seeing your state, I came to take you out of your Samadhi. The pain your body endured was felt by me. We are one. I took the pain on top of my body. There is no difference between us. I endured the pain so you may stay in Nijananda. I gave you my great throne. Sit on my throne and be in bliss. Establish and follow the tradition of the Panth. Make the tradition of Sikhi spread in the world.” Guru Angad Dev ji folded his hands and said: “all this can be done only by you. You are the Omnipotent One and you will do your tasks. You can do as you wish. Everything is in your hands.” Guru Nanak Dev ji hugged Guru Angad Dev ji, being impressed by him. He said: “oh Angad, you are great! You are great! I will do all of my tasks through you. I will save the world and spread Sikhi.”

In this way, the Katha of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji was spoken by Baba Bhudda ji. The people who had doubts in their minds, the glory of the Guru destroyed the doubt. The Sikhs understood that one should not try to have their Sevas acknowledged as this led to an increase of ego. One should have no ego in the heart. One should not wish for rewards for doing Seva. Only then will the Guru write this in his account. Otherwise there will be faults in the Seva. One should be like a dead body in the grave, the Guru. One will receive the highest status. Don’t move your body or wish to have your self acknowledged. Be happy living within the will of the Guru. If the Guru gives poison to the Sikh, the Sikh should drink it without a doubt. The Sikh’s mind should say: “there is benefit for me in this.” Never look at the Guru with having faults, or think about them. One should carry their head on their palm and go to the Guru’s alley. Do not doubt the Guru in any way. Be like a dead body, having no objections. The Satguru’s Seva is very hard. Only the ones who have done it know of the results. That person becomes one with the Guru and do not come back again. The wandering of billions of lives is gone then. They receive the reward of this rare life. The Guru saves you from the great troubles. This reward is not received from anyone or anywhere else. By great fortune and Karma, one gets the Seva of the Guru. Great are those individuals who understand this. When the Parmeshwar is happy upon you, he meets you with the Guru and makes you great. The Guru is happy with Seva. When the Guru is happy, he meets you with the Prabhoo and makes you into the Bhagwant. The Sikhs were happy to hear this parasang. They understood the glory of the Guru and stayed close to the Guru. They did not acknowledge their achievements in front of Guru ji from then on. They stayed determined in their Seva, day and night. In this way, Sri Amritsar was built. The glory is like the Chooran for many sins.

Thus ends the 2nd Raas.
