Guru Amardas ji went up to Guru Angad Dev ji and said: “Satguru ji, your drama is unique and unspeakable. Why did you play this drama? Everyone was shocked and worried. It is not good to go to Sach Khand like this, as did the elder Satguru.” Sri Guru Angad Dev ji then spoke: “the Sikhs had fallen prey to doubt. They were wondering if I was going to Sach Khand, just like Guru Nanak Dev ji, with my physical body. They talked amongst themselves, like so. If I didn’t do the disappearance, their doubt would have remained for their Guru. Their doubt would had become filth on their minds, which I have now washed away. I wanted the Sikhs to be at peace for doing my Sangat. Without faith, peace cannot be achieved.” Guru Angad Dev ji then smiled and continued: “oh Purkha, listen: you are now complete. This world is like a river with flowing water. The waves come out of the water and then go right back in again. Water comes up, and then goes back into the water again; no difference. The Saints do not believe in duality or difference. They see Aatma and Parmatma as one. Just as bubbles form in water, that is how birth and death are. The leaves on the tree eventually wilt and die. They cannot reattach themselves to the tree. New leaves then come. When the body grows old, it dies. It does not come back. From the beginning of time, this is how it’s been. This cannot be overcome. Do not mourn after me. Discard your attachments. Remain in high spirts and good will by singing Shabad Kirtan. Listen to Kirtan.” At that time, both of Guru Angad Dev ji’s sons came and fell at Guru ji’s feet. Both of the sons spoke: “please tell us what you want us to do after you go. Please tell us the traditions of the family.” Satguru ji heard his sons and spoke: “do not perform the rituals of the world or the family with me. Sing and listen to Kirtan and do the Simran of the Satnam. Stay in bliss and be happy. Cremate my body with fire.” He took Guru Amardas ji’s hand and clasped it with his sons’ hands as well as the Sangat’s. He then addressed the Sangat: “I have placed Sri Guru Amardas ji on my throne. There is no difference between the two of us. Whoever will see a difference between us, will regret it. Guru Amardas ji has the gifts of giving bhugat and mukat (worldly and spiritual bliss) in his hands. Whoever serves him, will be in peace. Whoever comes to him, will succeed in this world. Whoever will be jealous of him, will be in pain. The ones who will be jealous, their wishes will not be fulfilled. They will spoil what they have.” Guru ji then called the Julaha of the village. The Julaha came as fast as he could. He was told to leave his house and to make a new one for himself. The stud in the ground by which Guru Amardas ji tripped, became green and eventually grew into a tree. Guru ji said: “do my cremation beside that stud. There will be a big temple there one day. The stud will become a tree and stay green for a very long time.” The Julaha was given a lot of money and was told: “make your new house on another piece of land. If you stay here, you and your family will all die. For this reason, to protect you in the future, I have given you money and bought the land from you.” The Julaha heard this and was scared and thankful at the same time. He took the money from Guru ji.
Guru ji then instructed Guru Amardas ji and the Sikhs: “where the kareer stud is green, do my cremation there.” Guru ji’s face was in total bliss. He was blossomed like a red lotus, just as the rising sun. His eyes were full of bliss and everyone was in awe, listening to and looking at Guru ji. He was in pure bliss as he was connected to the light within him. To go in and out of his body was in his own hands. Guru ji then glanced at everyone, blessing them all. He then laid down, suddenly, after giving everyone a blissfully, blessed glance. He covered himself with a cloth and headed towards Sach Khand.
Brahma and Shiva came to get Guru ji. They folded their hands and said “Dhan, Dhan. You spread the message of Guru Nanak Dev ji to everyone. You tolerated the most intolerable and were skilled at controlling, and not revealing, your powers. You were determined to not show your greatness. You did not show any miracles. You did not want to be praised as the most powerful being. You had the calmest patience in your heart which was still, like the Sumer Mountain.” Other Devatas, Inder and others, came and sang the glories of Guru Angad Dev ji: “jai, jai,” they sang. Gorakh Nath and the other Sidhs came and praised Guru ji. The heaven cried out in praises “jai jai.” The Devatas celebrated with great enthusiasm and said: “great is the Satguru, Dhan, Dhan!” The Devatas came forward with respect as the Light of Sri Guru Angad Dev ji passed through Heaven. A garland made of the flowers of the Kalapbrish (the tree of wish-fulfillment) was placed around Guru ji’s neck. The Devatas showered Guru ji with fistfuls of flowers and sprinkled sandalwood essence everywhere. They brought many things to do his worship, his Aarti with. The wives of the Devatas danced and sang in joy. The Heavens were celebrating the arrival of Guru Angad Dev ji. The full extent of this celebration could not be described.
Back on earth, Guru Amardas ji and the other Sikhs obeyed Guru Angad Dev ji’s command and hid their sorrow in their hearts. They performed beautiful Kirtan and shouted out “jai, jai,” out loud. They had a special vessel made, covered with flowers. There were garlands of flowers hanging from it. Beautiful cloth was laid on it. Satguru ji’s body was bathed and covered with cloth. Guru ji’s body was then placed on the vessel. Baba Bhudda ji, along with other Sikhs picked up the vessel on top of their shoulders. A pyre made of sandalwood was prepared on the grounds of the Julaha’s old house. Sesame seed oil and ghee were rubbed on the pyre. Satguru ji’s body was placed on top of the pyre. Baba Dasu ji lit the pyre and everyone did the Simran of Satnam. They performed Kirtan. Listening to the Kirtan, their pain went away. Everyone came to bow their heads and did not express their sorrow, as per Guru ji’s command. Everyone then went home and praised Guru Angad Dev ji. They said: “Guru ji was great like the ocean. His heart was still, like the Sumer Mountain. His tolerance was unmatched. There is no one like Guru ji in the past, present or future. He would dispel the pain of people just by looking at them. The darkness of Kaliyuga was dispelled by his radiant presence. Great is Guru Angad Dev ji and beautiful is his glory.”
Many days had passed of doing Kirtan and Simran. Then everyone got together and collected food, ghee and sugar. Sikhs were invited from far and wide. Everyone came to the house of Guru ji. Sri Guru Amardas ji would stand in the Langar hall and prepare the Langar himself. Many dishes of delicacies were made and the Sikhs did many types of Sevas. The Pangat was set and the food was distributed. The Sangat sat in lines and enjoyed the delicious Langar. The day of Guru Angad Dev ji was celebrated with great enthusiasm. They did the Simran of Guru Angad Dev ji and bowed, thinking of him. They folded their hands and did Ardaas by saying Guru Nanak Dev ji’s name. Sangat from far away came and bowed their heads. Guru Amardas ji sensed what was in the hearts of Baba Dasu and Baba Dattu. Guru ji bowed and left for Goindwal, walking backwards. The Sangat was with him and went along with him to Goindwal from Khadoor. He reached the 9 km mark and then bowed his head to the ground and did the Simran of Guru Angad Dev ji. After bowing, he turned towards Goindwal and went home. After reaching home, he sat on the throne of the Guru in his court.
It was 1609 Vikram, Chet Sudhi 4th (4 days after new moon), the day that Guru Angad Dev ji left his body for Sach Khand. He was born into the clan of Trehan Khatris to father Baba Pheroo Mal ji and Mata Sabhrai ji. Mata Kheevi ji was his wife, a pious, honest and pure-hearted soul. Baba Dasu and Baba Dattu were his sons that were very powerful. For 12 years, 6 months, and 9 days, Guru Angad Dev ji sat on the Throne of the Guru. Whoever reads or listens to the history of Guru Angad Dev ji, their wishes will be fulfilled. As Kavi Santokh Singh ji has heard the history, so has he written it.
Thus ends the history of Sri Guru Angad Dev ji.
