The feet of Sri Guru ji are my support as they are strong like the mountain. I would never let them go, not even by mistake. The obstacles are like the wind, which the mountain does not fear.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen Sri Guru Angad Dev ji to the history of the Guru. It is filled with many virtues. The Compassionate One travelled on after meeting Naarad ji. We soon arrived to an island in the ocean. The name of the island was Bisihar. There was a beautiful city within the island. It was filled with many gardens. There was a great fort built around the city. It was as though the fort wanted to stop the clouds. Sudhar Sain was the king of that nation. He ruled the big city. The Tika of the Bedi clan saw a beautiful spot and sat down. We spent the night there. In the morning, Bhai Mardana ji said: “please give me permission to go into the city. I will ask for food and eat.” Guru ji laughed and said to me: “what is Mardana saying?” I said: “this is his personality from birth. It cannot change after many tries.” Sri Guru ji said: “listen Mardana, who will you ask for food and eat from?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “I will go whom you give permission for. I will go there. I don’t know anyone here.” Guru ji said: “there is a Tarkhan here, named Pakhar. His son is named Jhanda. He is a good worker. Go to his home and get food.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and set off.
Bhai Mardana ji went into the city. He looked around for about 1 Ko. He met a person who asked him: “who are you and why are you here? What is your Varna and where are you going?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “tell me where Jhanda lives. He will ask me everything.” The person who met Bhai Mardana ji was named Inder Sain. He took him to Bhai Jhanda ji. Bhai Jhanda ji was making a Manji (bed). He saw Bhai Mardana ji and got up with respect. He laid out a bed for him to sit on. He showed a lot of love. Inder Sain said: “this person was looking for you. I was asking him about him but he didn’t tell me anything. I brought him here. He has some work with you. He came to your home for this.” Bhai Jhanda ji said: “where did you come from? What is your name and caste?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “my name is Mardana and I am a Doom Marashi. I was sent to you by Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the mine of virtues.” Bhai Jhanda ji said: “I have never heard that name before. I have never heard “Nanak.” I have never heard his name nor have I ever seen him before. I just heard his name now.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “you don’t know him but he knows you. Come with me. You will see him. He will recognize you. You will recognize him. You must know him. Without knowing him, why would he send me to you? Who has done this before?” Bhai Jhanda ji was wise. He said: “how does he dress? What tradition does he follow? I will go to him with a loving gift.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “he is called “Nanak Tappa,” in this world. He is great. He dresses as an Udaasi. His Darshan destroys the gravest of sins.” Bhai Jhanda ji thought about this. He thought to himself: “he must be a great saint.” He told his wife to make food. Inder Sain went to his home. Bhai Jhanda ji came to the garden. He collected flowers and fruits from the garden. Bhai Mardana ji saw this and said: “who was that who brought me to your home? He was handsome and nice. He brought me to your home. His personality was nice. He spoke sweetly. He made me happy with his welcoming nature.” Bhai Jhanda ji said: “he is the nephew of the king of our city. He is a good friend of mine. We do Bhagti together. We sing the praises of Prabhoo together. This is our daily task. We do it alone with love. We have discussions about the Aatma together. We then practice together. This makes love grow for Sri Prabhoo ji in our hearts. This gives us joy.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “you are great! You are the saints who are beloved to the Sri Prabhoo. You are wise and have coloured your minds with the love of Bhagti. You get together and do the Satsang. If the food is ready, we should quickly take it.” Bhai Jhanda ji got ready and took the food with him.
Bhai Jhanda ji put the plate on top of his head with the food in it. He walked behind Bhai Mardana ji. He asked about Guru Nanak Dev ji: “which language does he love?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “when you meet him, say the name of Kartaar.” Where Guru Nanak Dev ji was sitting, the two had arrived. Bhai Jhanda ji said: “Sri Kartaar, Kartaar ji.” He placed the food in front of Guru ji and sat down with joy. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “Jhanda, listen with your ears: why did you bring this food? What is your task?” Bhai Jhanda ji said: “Parmeshwar has sent you. I brought the food from home. Sant ji, please have the food. Complete my wish.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “can you recognize the Parmeshwar? Whom the great Munnis search for and say “Nayt, Nayt,” (not this, not this) do you know him?” Bhai Jhanda ji said: “listen Sant ji, we meet and sing his praises. We wish to find him. When we meet the complete Guru, he will show us our Aatma.” Sri Guru ji said: “who do you meet for Sangat?” Bhai Jhanda ji said: “he is the son of the king’s sister. We get together and do Bhagti of Parmeshwar everyday.” Sri Guru ji said: “this food you brought, divide it into 5 parts. One part will be given to Mardana. Call Inder Sain. Then I will eat your food.” Bhai Jhanda ji obeyed and divided the food into 5. One part was given to Bhai Mardana ji. Bhai Mardana ji said: “no, no; you eat first.” Guru ji said: “eat. You are hungry. Don’t refuse it.” Bhai Mardana ji ate the food. The other 4 parts were placed there.
Bhai Jhanda ji went to call Inder Sain. Sudhar Sain was his Mamma (maternal uncle). Inder Sain was sitting in the garden. Bhai Jhanda ji said: “the Dhyana you do for the Gyaan, I have met the complete saint, the giver of Mukti. Come quick. He is calling for you. He won’t eat food without you.” Inder Sain was surprised and happy. It was as though a thirsty person got Amrit. He got up and quickly went with him. They both had love in their hearts.
Where Guru Nanak Dev ji, the Tika of the Bedis was sitting, the two men came there. Inder Sain did his Darshan. They both bowed to Guru ji’s feet and sat down with love in their hearts. They both made requests, who had no vices in their hearts: “if you have the complete Gyaan, give us your wisdom, quickly. We had desired it for a long time. Kill our doubts. Give us the Gyaan Anand. Bless us, oh saint. We have forgotten our real form for millions of births. We have forgotten our real form. Show us the real form so we don’t come back here; so we see joy and sorrow as the same; which is without conflict; without attachment and hatred.” Guru ji heard this and spoke to break the doubts of the Bhagats: “if you wish for Gyaan Anand and be focused into your real self; then first give the Guru Dakshina. You can then get the Gyaan. You can listen to it. See the whole world as Asatya (false). Give me all that. The true Vichaar (the knowledge of Jeev, Ishwar, Sat and Asat) and the Vairagya (to not wish for any material things, to be detached), if you have this and generosity, you will get Gyaan by yourself. The great Anand comes to them. The ones who don’t have these virtues but wish for Gyaan, it is useless to give them wisdom. They are always clinging onto the worldly things. For this reason, you will be tested first and then given wisdom. In benevolence, you will get everything. Only then will you get the Gyaan.” Bhai Jhanda ji and Bhai Inder Sain ji both said: “our money, wealth, home and everything else, we place it all at your feet. We won’t touch anything. Whatever is ours, is now yours.” Sri Guru ji spoke: “what is left with you now?” They thought hard and then gave an answer with patience: “we have our bodies. We have nothing left with us.” The light of the Bedis then spoke: “think about this hard. These bodies of yours will not last forever. For this reason, give me the bodies as well and then listen to the Gyaan.” Both obeyed and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. They gave their bodies. Guru ji then said: “what do you have left now? Think about it and then tell me.” They both heard this and said: “we only have our Antiskaran (Chit, Munn, Bhuddi, Ahankaar) left now. We have nothing else left. We have stated everything we thought we had.” Guru ji then said: “the Antiskaran is also made of the 5 Primal elements. Whatever is made of the Asatya (not infinite/ not true) how can it make anything that is infinite? The Antiskaran you speak of, give me that as well. Forget about that too. You will then immerse with Gyaan Anand. If you have any doubts then tell me.” When Guru Nanak Dev ji said this, the two gave their minds and wisdoms to the feet of the Guru. They had now given their wealth, body and mind. Guru ji then said: “the doubt you may have, say it now.” Both of them thought about what to say. They were about to ask but Guru ji interrupted: “the thought that you had, came from your Munn (mind). You had already given me your Munn. Why are you using the mind for your own use now? What you gave to the Guru, you have no reason to use that anymore. Don’t think of anything now as that is the Dharma of the Munn.” The two thought and made a decision that they couldn’t think of anything. They made a decision: “we gave Guru ji our Munns, we can’t use it now.” Guru ji knew what they were thinking. Guru ji said: “how are you making a decision? This is done by the Bhuddi. You gave me the Bhuddi as well. How can you do that?” When the two heard this, they remembered what they did. They were fortunate. Guru ji said: “you are trying to remember. That is done by the Chit. That is its Dharma. You gave me that as well. How can you use your Chit now?” The both thought with their egos, their sense of existence: “We gave our Munn, Bhuddi and Chit-“ Guru ji interrupted their thought: “you’ve given me your egos, Ahankaar. You gave that already. This is part of the 4 divisions of the Antiskaran. You gave them to me. Think about it. If there is something above this, then ask. I will tell you.” When they heard this, Inder Sain thought about this: “what else am I made of? I am not my wealth, body, Munn, Bhuddi, Chit or Ahankaar. Who am I?” As soon as he realized this, he went into Samadhi. He saw his Aatma. It was the unlimited and blissful form. In this way Guru ji gave the Aatam Gyaan to both. Guru ji then said: “now we can eat!” I got permission and gave the food to everyone.
Sri Guru ji took the food in his hands and ate the food, seeing the Bhagti of his servants. Where a great saint was met, that is where Sri Prabhoo ji ate. Otherwise Guru ji just ate the wind. The one who destroyed the sins, he ate half his food. He gave half his food to Bhai Jhanda Baadi ji. Bhai Jhanda Baadi ji ate the food of Guru ji. As soon as he put the food in his mouth, his deepest Kapaats opened up and he saw the full form of his Aatma. His doubts and attachments were destroyed. The effect of Maya was destroyed. The sense of duality was broken. He went into Samadhi. His sense of his body’s existence was gone. Both Sikhs sat in Samadhi. They were still. They experienced the bliss of the Aatma which was priceless. They sat like this for 9 hours.
When it was around 2 am, Guru ji got up to bathe. Sri Suriya then came up. Guru ji spoke up and took the two out of their Samadhis. Their desires were all gone. The Master of the Universe spoke in a sweet voice: “Inder Sain, I will give you the Manjhi of this land. You are the Guru of this land now.” Bhai Inder Sain ji folded his hands and said: “oh form of Kartaar, Mine of Virtues; I have no more desires. I will do as you say. I do not see the existence in past, present or future. Just as the colour black exists in the Kaajal, I see the Parmatma as the only One. I received this wisdom from you.” When Guru ji saw Bhai Inder Sain ji’s state, he determined that he was over the world now. Guru ji gave the Manjhi to Bhai Jhanda ji then. He was the Satguru of the land. Guru ji sent him to his land.
This news spread in Bisihar. People talked and the news reached Raja Sudhar Sain: “a Tappa Sadhoo has come and is sitting outside of the city. He has made Jhanda Baadi the Satguru.” The Raja heard this and sent a person to where Bhai Jhanda ji and Bhai Inder Sain ji were. The person came and saw everyone. He did Guru ji’s Darshan. He said to the people sitting: “who is the Tappa out of you the one named “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji?” The king is calling him.” Bhai Inder Sain ji spoke: “I will go with you to the Raja. I will tell him everything.” He said to Guru ji: “I will come back to you.” Guru ji said: “why are you going? Don’t worry and stay here.” Bhai Inder Sain ji said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, listen oh Giver of Mukti: the Raja is my Mamma, my maternal uncle. He does not know of your greatness. Please give me permission so I can tell him. I can tell him the good tradition by which it will be good for him too.” Bhai Inder Sain ji went.
Bhai Inder Sain ji met the Raja and said: “go to his shelter. The saint is the form of Kartaar. He can complete the empty and empty the complete. He can establish the unestablished and ruin the established. He can make the small, big and make the big, small. He is omnipotent. Understand him oh Raja.” The Raja said: “I will do as you say. How do I go to his shelter? I have heard of his greatness. I wish to see him.” Bhai Inder Sain ji said: “take some gifts for him. Leave your ego here. Take fruits for him. Bow to his feet.” The Raja listened to his nephew. He knew that it was for his own good.
The Raja took fruit and went to see Guru ji. He walked barefoot along with his servants and ministers. He came with love and devotion. He folded his hands and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. He laid down in the Ashtanga way. He didn’t get up. Guru ji patted the Raja on the back and said: “get up Raja. You will be radiant. The 17 kings around you, you will be the biggest one. They will come and bow to your feet. If they don’t, they won’t be able to fight you.” When Guru ji saw the Raja’s love, he blessed him with a bigger kingdom. The Raja was happy with the boons. He saw Guru ji as the Parmeshwar. He folded his hands and said: “come to my city and home.” Guru ji stayed there for 1 month. He completed the tasks of his servants. He did Keertan and Katha for that time. Guru ji said: “listen Raja, don’t compare yourself to Jhanda. If you want what is good for you, always bow to him and be humble in front of him. He will spread Sikhi in the whole land.” The whole country bowed to Bhai Jhanda ji. Naam, donations and bathing; this wisdom was given to all. People did this, seeing how this was good for them. They worked honestly and donated their earnings.
Guru ji then wished to go forward. The Raja got news of this and spoke with sadness: “the elephants, horses, kingdom and wealth that I have; please give this to Jhanda and take me with you. I won’t be able to live without you, oh Master of the Universe. Just as a fish cannot survive without water, I won’t survive without you.” His eyes began to shed tears and his throat swelled up with emotion. His body trembled. Guru ji noticed the Raja’s state. He saw his true love. Guru ji said: “focus your attention on me. I will always be by your side. Prepare Panchamrit with purity and cleanliness; do an Ardaas by placing a Takka. I will come to you and complete your wishes.” Guru ji gave him hope. The people of the land along with Bhai Jhanda ji were given hope. Guru ji then continued with his travels from there.
