Make all of the obstacles powerless in front of me, so that the praise of the Guru can be written and completed well. May this Granth be radiant like the moon on the 2nd day.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach.
After the Janyow ceremony, Guru ji liked to stay hidden from everyone. He was a carefree personality and kept within himself. He was the form of bliss and didn't want to show his powers to anyone. He was always in an “Udaaseen” state (above and detached from the world). No fool would know about his state. Guru ji would keep his eyes closed for most of the time. Guru ji was not eager to speak. He did his bodily functions as was needed. His Indriyas were in his full control. His attention was within himself. He was totally detached from the world, just like a child playing within the world. He didn't desire anything, looking at objects. Men and women saw him and said: "Kalu's son's mind is different. What bad thing happened that made this wise person go quiet? Has an evil eye been casted upon him? Is that the reason he is so carefree? Has an evil spirit possessed him? He doesn't speak to anyone or hear them." In this way, many days passed
One day, Pitha Kalu ji gave Guru Nanak Dev ji a lot of love. He hugged his son and put his hand on his head. He kissed his head with bliss. He looked at his son and thought to himself: "if he works, his intellect will illuminate. I will make him work a little bit. He will slowly get involved as he works." Pitha ji then said: "go and tend to the cows. Protect them and watch over them. We only have you as our son. How will we maintain our living if you don't work? Son, time does not pass well by sitting down. Do some work to keep your mind busy. You always seem depressed. Herding the cows will keep you busy. We will get more milk that way too. The servants that tended the cows put them in a bad state. Give the cows green grass to eat." Whatever was said to Guru Nanak Dev ji, he listened and responded: "if you wish, I will go in the morning and tend to the cows." The breaker of bonds slept the night.
In the morning, Guru Nanak Dev ji went to herd of the cows. He got ready with joy. He opened the ropes of the cows with his own hands and lined them all up. He left with the cows like this. He held a stick in his hand to guide the cows to the greener fields. He let them graze the fields for green grass. It was like his previous name was “Gopal,” as in Krishan tending the cows. He was revealing his true form to everyone. He would walk behind the cows and have them graze the fields. He would bring the cows back in the evening. The black and brown cows would come back home. Pitha ji was very happy to see this. He was happy to see that his son was working and keeping busy. He thought: "he will slowly like doing everything. He has let go of his depression and has kept his mind busy with work."
The lotus-like body of Prabhoo came home and sat down. He ate food and drank milk. He took a blanket on top of his body and went to sleep. Pitha Kalu ji woke up early and said to Guru ji: "son Nanak, wake up!" The master of the universe heard his father's voice and got up. He went to go tend to the cows. He opened their ropes and took them towards the fields. He saw land with green fields and broke the boundary fence to take his cows in. When he was free, he laid down and fell asleep. The cows only grazed that particular field. When the cows ate all of the wheat in the middle of those fields, the owner of the fields came. He was shocked to see his fields. He said: "which stubborn person grazed this field? I got tired watering my fields so much and some fearless person ruined my fields. The cows have grazed my field and are sitting in the middle like they don't have an owner." Guru ji heard the yelling and woke up. He then took all of the cows out of the fields. The farmer was angry and yelled: "I won't let you leave today, empty. Pay the fine for the whole field, otherwise I will go to the Hakim, Rai Bhullaar." The farmer went and gathered the cows. He was very angry. The lotus-eyed Guru then said: "let go of the cows! Stop being upset. Whatever is in your destiny, Prabhoo will give you your profits. When something is ruined, it is not fixed by fighting. Whatever is supposed to be in your karma, nobody can ruin it. Everything is in the hands of the master of the universe, the Prabhoo. He doesn't listen to anyone else. So leave the cows and let go of what happened." The farmer didn't listen to Guru ji as he was mad about his fields being ruined.
The farmer kept fighting and walking with Guru ji. They eventually reached to where Rai Bhullaar was sitting. The farmer said: "he ruined my fields. My wheat crops were eaten up by his cows. His father is the Patwari who is working without wisdom. Oh lord of the land, give me justice, or your whole district will be ruined. If the crops will be ruined in this way, how can the farmers make a living? How can they live here?" Rai Bhullaar heard this and got upset. He looked at the famer and spoke harshly: "everyone fears poorness. Did this carefree child ruin the fields?" Rai Bhullaar said to his employee: "this child lives in his own world. He is carefree. Call Kalu here. He will pay the fine for the field being ruined."
The employee went to Pitha Kalu ji's home and said to him: "come and see what your son has done. He has ruined the fields of a farmer." Mehta Kalu ji heard this and got upset. He thought to himself: "my son does not show me any peace." The employee and Pitha ji came to where Rai Bhullaar and Guru Nanak Dev ji were standing. Rai Bhullaar spoke harshly: "listen Kalu, do you not have even a little fear? You sent your carefree son to tend to the cows. The cows ruined the farmers crops. How can this be tolerated? The wheat that has been ruined, pay the fine for it." The omnipotent, omniscient and treasure of virtues, Guru Nanak Dev ji, heard this and said: "the cows did not ruin anything. How can you take the fine? Not one leaf has been harmed from the field. You are getting upset over nothing. If the cows ate anything from the field, you can surely take the fine. The wise ones do not trust the words of fools." The farmer heard this and said: "not one leaf is left from my field?! Send someone to see the fields. I am not lying to you." Rai Bhullaar was confused, listening to the both of them. He sent a person to see the fields so he could get to the bottom of this.
When the person went to fields, the fields were still green. The person came back to Rai Bhullaar and told him everything: "I looked around the whole field. There is no foot print of any animal, nor has any leaf been harmed. The fields are green. There is no sign of breakage in the boundary fence. The crops are fine. This farmer is lying. Oh leader of the people, the farmer deserves punishment." The farmer was shocked to hear this. He went to his fields to see for himself.
He saw his rectangular field and went quiet. He looked at his crops and returned to Rai Bhullaar. His fields were green. He couldn't understand why. He did not approach Rai Bhullaar out of embarrassment. He also did not understand the glory of Guru Nanak Dev ji. He didn't bow to his feet. His karma was bad. His good fortunes did not arise yet. He was shocked to see his fields all green. Guru Nanak Dev ji went home with his father with great joy. The farmer was shown to be lying, whose fields the cows grazed. Rai Bhullaar determined the farmer as crazy, who came to ask for justice. Rai Bhullaar regretted why he spoke so harshly towards good people.
In this way, Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji did such amazing things. Guru ji would take the cows to the jungles everyday to have the cows graze the fields. He was the destroyer of pain for all. Whatever fields the cows wanted to graze, Guru ji never stopped them. Many fields were grazed and would go green again, without the farmers ever knowing. The cows were radiant as they got fatter. The cows would give a lot of milk. There was growth in the amount of butter that would be made. Mehta Kalu ji was happy to see this. The milk was churned in a really big pot by the maid. Mata ji would prepare the butter and give it to her son to eat. The calves were really big and strong from drinking all the milk. In this way, to bless the Jeevas, Guru Nanak Dev ji spent his time.
